چکیده

This paper presents results on a preliminary study using syntactic information to predict language dominance in Spanish-English bilingual children. Our approach uses a bag of syntactic grammar rules taken from narratives in English and Spanish. We then measure prediction accuracy of categorizing children into Spanish-dominant, English-dominant, and Balanced Bilingual. The results are competitive to previous work using a much larger and diverse set of features with shallow syntactic analysis. This paper shows the potential benefit of adding a deeper syntactic analysis for modeling language in young children, even in the case of having mixed language samples.

Metalinguistic Awareness in Monolingual and Bilingual Children and its Relationship to Receptive Vocabulary Scores and Performance on a Reading Readiness Test

Metalinguistic awareness is the ability to attend to, and reflect upon, the properties of a language. Metalinguistic awareness is often assessed using tasks of phonological and syntactical awareness (see, e.g., Bialystok & Herman, 1999; Bowey, 1990; McGuiness, 2005, for reviews). Tests of phonological awareness usually require the analysis of sounds in words, whereas tests of syntactical awaren...

Phonological skills in predominantly English-speaking, predominantly Spanish-speaking, and Spanish-English bilingual children.

PURPOSE There is a paucity of information detailing the phonological skills of Spanish-English bilingual children and comparing that information to information concerning the phonological skills of predominantly English-speaking (PE) and predominantly Spanish-speaking (PS) children. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between amount of output (i.e., percentage of time each...

Age of first bilingual language exposure as a new window into bilingual reading development.

How does age of first bilingual language exposure affect reading development in children learning to read in both of their languages? Is there a reading advantage for monolingual English children who are educated in bilingual schools? We studied children (grades 2-3, ages 7-9) in bilingual Spanish-English schools who were either from Spanish-speaking homes (new to English) or English-speaking h...

Electrophysiological assessment of the time course of bilingual visual word recognition: Early access to language membership.

Previous research examining the time course of lexical access during word recognition suggests that phonological processing precedes access to semantic information, which in turn precedes access to syntactic information. Bilingual word recognition likely requires an additional level: knowledge of which language a specific word belongs to. Using the recording of event-related potentials, we inve...
